CVE-2026-23657 Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

A Use After Free vulnerability (CVE-2026-23657, CVSS 7.8 High) in Microsoft Word allows local, unauthorized attackers to execute arbitrary code by convincing a user to open a malicious Office file. The attack requires user interaction and is not exploitable via the Preview Pane. Microsoft has released a security update to address this vulnerability.

Why does the CVE title indicate that this is a remote code execution? The word Remote in the title refers to the location of the attacker. This type of exploit is sometimes referred to as Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE). The attack itself is carried out locally. This means an attacker or victim needs to execute code from the local machine to exploit the vulnerability. Is the Preview Pane an attack vector for this vulnerability?
