Data Security , Privacy , Encryption , Government security , Critical Infrastructure Security BlackBerry survey reveals government security risks from consumer messaging apps April 22, 2026 Share By SC Staff (Adobe Stock) Government and infrastructure security leaders are placing their organizations at significant risk by relying on foreign-hosted consumer messaging apps for sensitive discussions, Tech Radar reports. A survey by BlackBerry Secure Communications found that 98% of security decision-makers in government and critical infrastructure across the US, UK, Canada, and Singapore use foreign-hosted platforms not designed for confidential communications. Notably, 83% use WhatsApp for sensitive discussions. This reliance is compounded by a widespread misunderstanding of encryption's capabilities; 88% of leaders are confident in their current setup, yet over half believe encryption protects metadata like location and IP addresses, and 47% think it prevents impersonation attacks. Furthermore, 41% assume communications remain secure even on compromised devices. The findings highlight a critical gap in encryption literacy and a dangerous overreliance on consumer-grade applications for high-security environments. The report emphasizes that encryption secures the communication channel, not the identity of the participants or the integrity of the device.
