The "Copy Fail" vulnerability (CVE-2026-31431, CVSS 7.8 HIGH) in the Linux kernel's algif_aead module mishandles in-place cryptographic operations, allowing a local attacker to escalate privileges or escape a container. Affected versions include Linux kernel 4.14 through 5.10.253, 5.11 through 5.15.203, 5.16 through 6.1.168, 6.2 through 6.6.131, and 6.7 through 6.12.80. The flaw is patched in kernel versions 5.10.254, 5.15.204, 6.1.170, 6.6.137, 6.12.85, and later stable releases.
It was discovered that the Linux kernel algif_aead module did not properly handle in-place cryptographic operations. This flaw is known as Copy Fail. A local attacker could use this to escalate privileges, or possibly escape a container. (CVE-2026-31431) Several security issues were discovered in the Linux kernel. An attacker could possibly use these to compromise the system. This update corrects flaws in the following subsystems: - Cryptographic API; - Packet sockets; (CVE-2026-31504, CVE-2026-43033, CVE-2026-43077, CVE-2026-43078)
