A critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-31431, CVSS 7.8 HIGH) in the Linux kernel's algif_aead module, known as Copy Fail, allows a local attacker to escalate privileges or escape a container via improper handling of in-place cryptographic operations. The flaw is remediated by upgrading to specific patched versions such as 5.10.254, 5.15.204, or 6.6.137, depending on the kernel series in use.
It was discovered that the Linux kernel algif_aead module did not properly handle in-place cryptographic operations. This flaw is known as Copy Fail.
